We've compiled a lists of thoughts regarding fertility. Some of them are misconceptions, some of them true. It's our hope to clear a few up for you.
Loose fitting underwear for men is important when you are trying to conceive.
- True. If underwear is on the tighter side, then sperm is being kept too close to high body heat.
Laptops can cause infertility.
- True, particularly in men. If the laptop is used on the lap rather than used on a table or desk, then the heat generated from the unit can harm sperm in his unit.
On average it takes 3 months for a couple to conceive.
- False. It takes on average 6 to 12 months of active sex to conceive.
Saliva is a good lubricant during sex if you are trying to conceive.
- False. Saliva kills sperm. It is much better to use a lubricant that is sperm friendly. Pre-Seed is one such brand.
A egg can be fertilized for up to two days.
- False. An egg can only be fertilized for 12 to 24 hours after is has been released. Sperm can live for up to 2 to 3 days. Don't confuse the two issues.
Cough medicine can help with conception.
- True. Just as long as it does not contain an antihistamine. Expectorants loosen up and thin out any body mucus, including cervical mucus.
The longer it takes you to get pregnant, the more likely you are to conceive a boy.
- Partly true. Women who take longer to conceive are more likely to have thicker cervical mucus, and boy sperm swim better in thicker mucus.
A woman in her early 20s not using birth control has a 50 per cent chance of getting pregnant each month.
- False. When you’re under 25, your monthly chances of getting pregnant are just 20 to 25 per cent. The monthly odds for a woman who is over 35 are about 15 per cent.
Having oysters increase your chances of getting pregnant.
- True. It is scientifically true. Oysters are the food chain’s most concentrated source of zinc, one of nature’s most fertile minerals. It’s also a libido booster. The benefits extend to both sexes, so both the partners can share it.
Watching a sexy movie can help you get pregnant.
- True. Studies show that men produce more sperm after watching a sexy movie. And it doesn’t have to be X-rated, either. Both the partners can watch it together and have a great time ahead.
Men don’t have a biological clock.
- False. Men do have a biological clock. Men can produce viable sperm and father babies well into their 50 and 60s, but older men are more likely to have dipping testosterone levels and a decrease in the quantity and quality of sperm.
